Mariners Just Need One More Win to Become I-League Champions

Kalyani, March 9, 2020: Mohun Bagan’s winning run was finally stopped when the Mariners were held to a gritty draw against defending champions Chennai City FC. The Mariners were denied by the woodwork while their opponents put up a stubborn resistance in defence. But with all other matches results it is now clear that only one more win will make sure the i-league title for the mariners.

With other results going their way, Kibu Vicuna’s team still hold a sizable lead at top of the I-League table as they get ready to face former champions Aizawl FC. Komron Tursunov is back after serving a one match suspension while Daneil Cyrus is also available for selection. Spanish central defender will be sitting out due to accumulation of yellow cards.

Vicuna had this to say in press conference,”We respect Aizawl and are aware of the form they are bringing in to the game tomorrow. They have very good players and fight all the way through. We must guard against complacency and look to play to our strengths. If we do that, we believe we could achieve our objectives.”

Coached by former Mohun Bagan coach Stanley Rozario, Aizawl FC have 16 points in 14 matches & are placed at 9th position. The People’s Club are coming off back to back away draws against Chennai City & Real Kashmir. Attacking midfielder Rochharzela is in good scoring form & has scored in last 2 matches. Speaking to press, Rozario said, “They drew with Chennai City in their last match and the pressure is on Mohun Bagan now. My players are ready to take them on and looking forward to a positive result and take something out of it. In football, everything is possible”.

The first leg of this match ended in a goalless draw on opening round of the season.

Mohun Bagan take on Aizawl FC at the Kalyani Stadium on 9th March.
