Final of Zee Bangla Football League Abandoned When Mohun Bagan Took Lead

Koushik Scores Second Goal from the Penalty Spot

Kolkata, June 23, 2019: Mohun Bagan came back from a 1-0 deficit to take lead of 2-1 when a section of the home team supporters started throwing objects into the ground. Due to safety reasons the match was stopped by the officials and later it was declared as abandoned.

Mohun Bagan started the match in a safe manner and was looking to hold possession of the ball. Quess East Bengal took the lead just before half time from the penalty spot. Bagan goalkeeper Mikel Soren was rock solid under the bar and due to his heroics scoreline remained same.
After the water break of 45th minute, Mohun Bagan Colts returned to the match brilliantly. Striker Koushik Santra header landed into the net from a long throw in. Around 52nd minute, East Bengal goalkeeper committed a horrible foul on Bagan striker Shubha Ghosh. Koushik calmly placed the ball from the spot to give Bagan a lead of 2-1.

This started a series of unfortunate events as the home team’s fans were unhappy with the referee’s decision to award the penalty in favor of Mohun Bagan. There were objects like bricks, wood blocks, water bottles which were hurled into field targeting Mohun Bagan players and match officials. The referee stopped the game due to safety concerns and the match was never resumed. A great match which was destined to have a electrifying finish ended as an abandoned one.
This is not the first instance of such incidence in the Quess East Bengal ground when opponent team is leading and objects were hurled into field to abandon the match. In recent past against Peerless S.C. in C.F.L. when the home team was trailing, the match was abandoned due to safety concerns.
The honorary director of Mohun Bagan Football Club Debasish Dutta said that ” Quess East Bengal is responsible for providing security inputs to organizers to avoid the untoward incident. IFA must intervene in this case. But IFA is known to be biased and IFA secretary is close to other club whereas President is still an Executive Committee Member of East Bengal. So, there is a remote possibility to get justice.” The result of the abandoned match will be decided by a joint committee of the organizers and IFA.
Most appalling fact is that the police force was ready to conduct the match by deploying additional forces and vacating unruly crowd from galleries but never received any instructions from the organizers or IFA.
