Kalyani, August 28, 2019: After a disappointing loss in Durand Cup final, Mohun Bagan finally achieved their first win in CFL. Vicuna’s side took on BSS Sporting at the Kalyani stadium today for their final preparation before the CFL Derby against Quess East Bengal on 1st September. Extreme humidity and heat couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the green and maroon fans much as they were present for supporting their team in numbers like every Matchday.

From the very 1st minute of the match, Mohun Bagan tried to put the pressure on BSS Sporting defence. As a result, within 5 minutes of play, Mariners got a penalty which was wasted by Fran Gonzalez by hitting the bar. Mohun Bagan took the lead with a brilliant header by Salva Chamorro which was equalized by William Opaku within 3min due to a silly defensive mistake by Arijit Bagui. A penalty call was not given and a number of free-kicks did not capitalize. A one to one was missed by Naorem and there was a goal line save by BSS defender. The first half ended 1-1 with Mohun Bagan being the much better side. BSS Sporting threatened the goal once or twice but Debjit was up to the task.

The second half saw the Mariners begin right where they left. Within 3min of the 2nd half the connection between two wingers helped the Mariners go up again in the match at the 47th Minute when left winger Naorem headed home from a curling center sent by right winger Britto . The flow of the game seemed set to continue with Bagan dominating but failing to score. SK Sahil, brought on in place of Imran, played well as usual and blocked many attacks. Joseba Beitia, brought on in place of Salva Chamorro, played as holding midfielder as usual and took some long rangers, which were narrowly wasted over the bar.Also Naorem was substituted by SK Faiyaz for fresh leg injection after 35min of play in the 2nd half. All in all, earning three points before facing crucial CFL derby shall be a great boost for the Mariners.
