Kolkata, Oct 25, 2019: Mohun Bagan confirmed their slot in semifinal after a 1-0 victory over host Chittagong Abahani in the last group league match in Sk Kamal International Gold Cup 2019. Malayali striker VP Suhair scored the one and only goal for the mariners.

Kibu Vicuna opted to rest Salva Chamorro from his starting lineup with VP Suhair pairing up with Julen Colians in attack. Joseba Beitia and Fran Gonzalez started in midfield with Britto on left wing.

Chittagong Abahani started brightly and had a few chances in the first few minutes. However, Daneil Cyrus and Fran Morante, the two rock solid stoppers defended them firmly for Mariners. Gradually Mohun Bagan took control after the 1st quarter of the match and tried to put pressure on Chittagong Abahani defence. As a result, Mariners got many corners and freekicks but Mohun Bagan attacking third players wasted these. A penalty call was not given where Daneil Cyrus was fouled inside the box and a goal line saved by Abahani’s defender where Suhair dribbled the goalkeeper in a one to one situation.

The second half saw the Mariners begin right where they left. In the 62nd minute of the match, V P Suhair scored for Bagan after beating Chittagong Abahani’s foreigner stopper in individual brilliancy. After conceding the goal, the home side tried to put the pressure on Mohun Bagan defense. However, Mohun Bagan defenders and goalkeeper Debjit Majumder foiled all of their attacks. Mohun Bagan also got some open chances in counter to double the lead but the strikers wasted all those chances. Two side backs Chullova and Dhanachandra played an excellent role in both defense and attack as well for Mariners. Fran Gonzalez was selected man of the match for his excellent performance in midfield. Mariners have reached the semifinals of the 2019 Sk Kamal International Gold Cup and the fixture of semifinal will be out tomorrow.
