Mohun Bagan Finishes Durand Cup Group League with All win

Kolkata, August 17, 2019: The final group match of Mohun Bagan saw Vicuna’s side take on Indian Navy at the Salt Lake stadium. Having already qualified for semi-final, Mohun Bagan went into this match for their final preparation in the Durand Cup before they take on Real Kashmir on 21st August. The incessant rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the green and maroon fans much as they were present for their team in numbers like every matchday.

The first half saw Mohun Bagan take the upper hand in the game play. The Navy keeper Bhaskar was called upon a number of times. A number of freekicks and goal attempts saw Faiaz and other Mohunbagan players like Gonzalez and Ghosh right into the foray of the action. A penalty call was not given and a number of freekicks did not capitalise. The first half ended 0-0 with Mohunbagan being the much better side. Indian Navy threatened the goal once or twice but Debjit was up to the task.

The second half saw the Mariners begin right where they left with Ghosh playing exceptionally well and taking on the Navy defense on a number of occasions. The flow of the game seemed set to continue with Bagan dominating but failing to score. Ultimately it took a somewhat unnecessary tackle by Dalraj on Faiz inside the Navy box. Fran Gonzalez scored the penalty and the only goal of the match. Romario Jesuraj, brought on in place of Naorem, played well with threatening from the right side a couple of times. Navy had a late penalty call denied and a yellow card late on in the game somewhat dented what had been a fine game for Gonzalez. All in all, earning three points before facing Kashmir in the semi-finals shall be a great boost for the Mariners.
