Mohun Bagan Go Top of the Table After a Four Goal Romp

Kolkata, September 8, 2019: Mohun Bagan raced to the top of Calcutta League table thanks to a breezy 4-0 victory over George Telegraph. The Mohun Bagan fans who had thronged to Mohun Bagan Ground on Sunday afternoon were delighted with the team scoring two goals in each half.

Kibu Vicuna opted to rest Fran Morante from his starting lineup with Fran Glez pairing up with Kim Kima in central defense. VP Suhair and Salva Chamorro started in attack with Naorem and Britto on each wing. Steady rain over the past few days had made the ground slushy and heavy but Mohun Bagan players coped with the conditions and were able to maintain their neat passing game on a difficult turf.

On the 16th minute Chullova sprinted along the right wing and swung in a pin point cross into the box which was headed in Suhair to put Mariners ahead. Minutes later another similar move saw Naorem come very close to scoring but he was unable to connect properly. On 34th minute a cross from Gurjinder Kumar was met by Salva Chamorro, who placed his header perfectly past the George ‘keeper. Mohun Bagan yet again dominated the play thanks to the triangle of Glez, Beitia and Sk Sahil in midfield and the defence was rarely troubled by George attackers in the first half.

George Telegraph started the second half brightly and had a few chancer in first few minutes. However, Debjit Mazumdar was alert in Mohun Bagan goal as he saved a powerful header from Eche while Chullova made a last ditch block to deny another chance. At this point Vicuna made three smart subs to take back control of the match, putting in Morante in defence and bringing on the speedy pair of Surabuddin and Subho Ghosh.

On 71st minute Chullova picked up his second assist of the day as young Naorem punted in a pass from him. On 84th minute Naorem capped off his man of the match performance by turning into a provider – his low cross was turned into Mohun Bagan’s fourth goal by Glez’s glancing header. Subho came close to making it 5-0 but the goal was cancelled due to offside.

Mohun Bagan now have 11 points in 6 matches and are top of the CFL table.
