MOHUN BAGAN RATNA 2010

“The success of Mohun Bagan has turned over a new leaf in the history of manly sport in Calcutta.The remarkable skill, courage, and in fact, all that constitutes a good game, and of which Mohun Bagan has given unmistakable proofs cannot fail to evoke the sincerest applause from all lovers of football”.

Mohun Bagan won IFA shield as the first Indian club back in July, 1911 during British Raj beating East Yorkshire Regiment by 2-1. It is no short of a fairy tale. Back then without any modern transportation system Mohun Bagan received unequivocal support of a huge mass. Even premiere printed media like London Times, Daily Mail and Manchester Guardian covered the IFA shield win at great length.

Captain Shibdas Bhaduri was awarded with posthumous Mohun Bagan Ratna in 2003. The honour was given to the rest of the team members posthumously in 2010.

The players who were part of Immortal 11

Shibdas Bhaduri : He was the captain of the team which won IFA shield in 1911.He used to play as left out and his speed and fluency and constant position change with his brother Bijaydas Bhaduri kept opponent guessing. He scored a goal and assisted Abhilash Ghosh for winning goal in 1911 IFA Shield final.

Bijaydas Bhaduri : The elder brother of captain Shibdas Bhaduri used to play as a left in. He was famous for his dribbling skills and body faints. He was the oldest member of shield winning team.

Abhilash Ghosh :The centre forward who scored the all important winning goal in IFA Shield final. He used to play hockey as well as a center forward for Greer club.

Hiralal Mukherjee : The lionhearted goalkeeper of Immortal Eleven. He had very good anticipation and saved 3 penalties against St. Xaviers in first round of IFA Shield

A Sukul : He played as right back of Immortal Eleven. He started playing for Mohun Bagan when he was merely 16 years old.

Rev. Sudhir Chatterjee : The charismatic defender joined Mohun Bagan in 1904 and trophies started pouring in right after that. He had very good anticipation skill and his inclusion bolstered the defence. He was the only player in Mohun Bagan side wearing boots in 1911 shield final.

Manmohan Mukherjee : He used to play is right half position but preferred to attack more. He was a good snatcher at the middle of the park.His son Bimal Mukherjee was the captain of the Mohun Bagan team which lifted the CFL title for first time in 1939

Rajen Sengupta : The youngest member of Immortal Eleven who played as centre half. He had short stature but his heading was very good and he had plenty of stamina.

Srishchandra Sarkar : He was famously known by his nickname Habul. He played as right in. He used to work in Calcutta Corporation.

Nilmadhab Bhattacharya : This stylish player was the left half of Immortal Eleven. His anticipation skill was exemplary therefore opponents had to toil hard to beat him.

Jatindranath (Kanu) Roy : He was the right winger with blistering speed. He was very adept in taking “Rainbow shot”.
