1965 – Hattrick of Winning Durand Cup

1960 was a golden year for Mohun Bagan. This year club grabbed the Calcutta double crown — IFA Shield and League and won Durand Cup jointly. That year at the Pre-Olympic Match of the Rome Olympic, Mohun Bagan’s Jarnail Singh, Chuni Goswami, Kempaiah selected in national squad.
In 1961 Mohun Bagan was the joint winner of IFA Shield and narrowly missed the chance to win Durand Cup and Rover’s Cup. This year club team went to East Africa tour. On 12th February 1961 Mohun Bagan started from Calcutta for the tour. Mr. Sailen Manna and Mr. Karuna Bhattacherjee went as the club officials with the team. In 19 matches, Mohun Bagan won 15, lost one and the rest were draw. Four matches were indicated as test matches, among which Mohun Bagan won two, lost one and one draw. Chuni Goswami, Chidanandan, Arumainayagam, Deepu Das performed extremely well. In this tour Mohun Bagan achieved huge popularity and admiration.
In 1962, Mohun Bagan won the First Division Calcutta Football League. In the League, both Mohun Bagan and arch rival East Bengal earned 40 points. So to decide the championship, a playoff match was organized and Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal by 2-0 and became the champion of the First Division Calcutta League. Mohun Bagan also grabbed IFA Shield for third time consecutively defeating Hyderabad XI by 3-1. This year Chuni Goswami, Jarnail Singh and Arumainayagam were selected in the national squad for Jakarta Asian Games, Indonesia. Chuni Goswami was the captain of the team. Indian team played extremely well and won the gold medal. This was India’s last Asian Games win. 1962 was also a remarkable year for the club, as Gostho Paul, the “Chinese Wall” received the “Padmasree Award” on 28th April from the hand of President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. This year Kumar Ramendra Nath Roy (1962–1979) was elected as the President of the club.
In 1963, Mohun Bagan won First Division Calcutta Football League for the 11th times. This year Mohun Bagan also won Durand Cup defeating Andhra Pradesh Police by 2-0 on the second day after the goalless draw on the first day. This year club left its old joint ground with East Bengal and became the major shareholder of the Calcutta Football Club’s ground. Club also built its new tent. General J. N. Chowdhury inaugurated the new tent of Mohun Bagan on the new ground. This year the legendary player of the club, Chuni Goswami got the “Arjun Award”.
In 1964, Mohun Bagan won Calcutta Football League and Durand Cup defeating East Bengal by 2-0. This year was the Platinum Jubilee Year of the club, which was celebrated throughout the year. After the completion of the celebration, club published a souvenir containing pictures of historical events. Sourindra Mohun Bose, the then General Secretary of the club wrote all the memorable victories of the club and mentioned that Dhiren Dey has significant involvement in this grand celebration. Umapati Kumar, Gostho Paul, Balai Das Chattopadhyay, Dinabandhu Sen all put their efforts for making the event in a same way as mini Olympic, the Platinum Jubilee Year was celebrated throughout the year. Different countries throughout the world provided their assistance for the arrangement of the different sports events. Club received greetings from different levels of State and society. A cricket match was organized between Indian team and a commonwealth cricket team which included players like Gary Sobers.An exhibition match was played between Indian Hockey team and Calcutta XI assembled team. A hockey team from France came also to play an exhibition match. Even some exhibition matches of tennis were organized and some renowned tennis players like Bob Hewitt, Martin Mulligan, Mike Sangstar, Ramanathan Krishnan, Joydeep Mukherjee, Premjitlal and Naresh Kumar of India took part. Tatabania football club from Hungary came with seven national team players to participate in this occasion. German Athletic team and Indian Athletic team jointly participated in an exhibition match. This year club came forward to form a Players’ Relief Fund. The great man of the club, Dhiren Dey was behind this honest idea.
In 1965, club became the champion in First Division Calcutta League and Durand Cup. Mohun Bagan created history by winning Durand Cup consecutively for three times as the first non military team. Club also reached the final of Rovers Cup but lost to Mafatlal Group SC by 0-1. Same thing happened in IFA Shield final, where club lost to East Bengal by a solitary goal.
In 1966, Mohun Bagan won the Rovers Cup defeating Vasco SC by 1-0.
1967 was not a good year for the club. Club only won the IFA Shield jointly with East Bengal. Club took the second position in Rovers Cup after defeated by East Bengal by 0-2 on the second day after a goalless draw on the first day.
In 1968, Mohun Bagan won the Rovers Cup defeating Leaders Club by 3-0 on the second day after the first day 0-0 draw. This year club also won the Amrita Bazar Centenary Cup.
In 1969, club won First Division Calcutta Football League also IFA Shield defeating East Bengal by 3-1. Club also reached the final of Rovers Cup but lost to East Bengal. This year Subhas Chandra Mitra (1969–1976) was elected as the Honorary General Secretary of the club.
