1997 CFL Champion Squad

In 1990, Mohun Bagan’s only success was the winning of First Division Calcutta League. This year Mohun Bagan players got the privilege to showcase their talent against famous World cupper of Cameroon Roger Milla when he came with his club (Diamond Club) to participate in a friendly match as a part of club’s centenary celebration. Mohun Bagan lost the match by 1-3 and Milla scored a goal in this match. Subrata Bhattacharya and Prashanta Banerjee performed well.

In 1991  Mohun Bagan won Rovers Cup by defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 1-0. Club also grabbed Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup and All Airlines Gold Cup.This year club first ever included any foreign player in the squad in its 100 years history. Cheema Okeri, the “Black Panther” played in green and maroon jersey in the Calcutta Football League for Bagan. I.M. Vijayan also joined Mohun Bagan in this year. In the Club administration there was a change. Mr. Swapan Sadhan (Tutu) Bose took the charge of general secretary of the club.

1992 was a good year for Mohun Bagan as the club managed to lift some national level tournaments like Federation Cup defeating East Bengal by 2-0, Rovers Cup defeating JCT Mills by 2-0 along with First Division Calcutta League and Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup.

In 1993, Mohun Bagan lifted the Federation Cup defeating Mahindra and Mahindra by a solitary goal scored by Sathyan and also grabbed the All Airlines Gold for the third time.

In 1994, Club registered hattrick of winning Federation Cup after 1980–1982 defeating Salgaocar SC. It’s a record in itself when any Indian Football club managed to win the Federation Cup consecutively for three years twice. Club also won Calcutta Football League, Durand Cup defeating East Bengal by 1-0 and Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup in this year.

In 1995 Club did not manage to grab any national level tournament, only won the PNB Centenary Trophy and took the second position in First Division Calcutta League. Mr. Anjan Kumar Mitra became the general secretary while Tutu Bose took the charge of club president this year.

In 1996, Mohun Bagan won the McDowell’s Cup and Bordoloi Trophy and came runners up in First Division Calcutta League.

In 1997, Club won DCM Trophy and Calcutta Football League. Club also reached the final of Durand Cup final, but unfortunately lost the game to FC Kochin. In this season  Mohun Bagan won the national football league for the first time securing 34 points in 18 games.  In the final game Mohun Bagan defeated Mahindra & Mahindra by 3-0 at saltlake stadium in presence of huge crowd.

In 1998, Club grabbed the Federation Cup and IFA Shield defeating East Bengal by 2-1 in both the encounters. A new feather of glory on the cap of Mohun Bagan was added when AFC recognized the club as the Diadora Team of Asia in January of this year.

In 1999, Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield defeating Tollygunge Agragami by 1-0 and Sanghati Cup at Kolkata.This year the best ever foreign footballer in India, Brazilian striker, ‘Green Parrot’ Jose Ramirez Barreto joined the team and the football lovers throughout the India were enchanted by his brilliant skill and ball control.
